About the location
The hill known as Mirenski Grad (Miren Castle) is nestled under the Karst Plateau in the immediate vicinity of the Italian border. Reaching 120 m above sea level the hill offers spectacular views of the Friuli Plain, the Dolomites, the Vipava Valley and the Julian Alps.
At the three crosses stands a stone orientation table. On the west and north slopes of the hill, slightly below the road, the remains of an ancient fort can still be seen. The fort's round ground plan reached almost 500 meters in circumference. Historians believe that in the 12th century a semi stone-built gentry residence stood here and this is probably where Mirenski Grad gets its name from.
